Write cross cultural management essay

General Guidance

Your essay should be 3500 words in length. In answering the questions you must ensure that you engage with key literature in the field that you are studying.  There is an expectation that you will engage with Journal articles and published research more than textbooks. You may use texts where writers have written about a particular topic in depth but try to avoid very general basic texts in organisational behaviour or management, as these will not give you enough depth for your assignment. You should conduct searches related to your topic through Emerald and EBSCO, which are on-line Journal databases. Please ensure that you reference all work correctly using Harvard standard. Please also ensure that you check your work for Plagiarism.

What are we looking for in your essays?

In general all essays should:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of the topic area related to the essay.
  • Show evidence of wide engagement with key literature in the topic area being considered.
  • Include critical discussion of the key concepts, models and theories that underpin the topic you are discussing.  This means moving beyond description and contrasting the similarities and differences between different approaches to the topic.
  • Use of relevant and focussed examples from published literature or your experience that support your discussion or a position that you are taking.  Be very clearly focussed when using work placed examples and ensure they are general enough to be applicable to your essay.
  • A clear structure, it is an essay not a report so prose format is required.  Use paragraphs, do not use bullet points.  Use diagrams if and where appropriate but make sure you discuss them if they are used.  Ensure that you proofread your work and that it is presented well.
  • Ensure that you have a clear structure.  That requires an introduction setting context and outlining approach, the main body of your essay directly related to the question set and a clear conclusion which addresses the question set.
  • Ensure that your English and expressions are clear.
  • Ensure that your references conform to Harvard standard and reference all sources, including those from the Internet accurately.

Essay Title and Assessment Criteria:

Question: National culture

There have been many criticisms of Hofstede’s original work on national culture. You should provide your own analysis of Hofstede’s work using appropriate supporting references and then outline the extent to which the limitations of his work have been responded to within later studies. Within your answer you should give specific examples of how the findings from the key studies could be used by managers in multinational companies.

Detailed requirement:

  • You need to demonstrate your understanding of Hofstede’s work
    • Why did he do it?
    • How? When?
    • Who was it for (key stakeholders)?
    • You may find it useful to give an example; perhaps showing a comparison between countries (MOROCCO)
  • Who subsequently critiqued Hofstede’s work?
    • Who?
    • Why? How?
    • How credible and valid do you think their findings were?

_    What were the limitations of their work?

  • What are the key studies on national culture which have been published since Hofstede’s work?
    • Why have you selected them?
    • What are their strengths and limitations
  • To what extent do these studies respond to the limitations of Hofstede’s work?
  • How could the findings from the key studies be used by managers? For example:
    • To inform policy
    • To recruit or retain employees
    • As part of performance management processes
    • As part of a growth strategy
    • Due diligence on potential growth or expansion of the company
