GOAL:
Evaluate your Windows system to determine what services are running and whether or not they are essential.
Part 1
1. Using your computer (laptop) click on the Windows START button (or SEARCH for SERVICES), click on CONTROL PANEL, click on CLASSIC VIEW (unless you are already in the Classic view), click Administrative Tools, and then click SERVICES. You should see a window similar to Figure 1. (Note: the Extended and Standard tabs at the bottom change the view slightly.)

2. Export the list of services to a .txt file by clicking ACTION, and then clicking Export List. Name the document with your <name> and click SAVE. Make a hardcopy of this list for your report.
3. Back in the Services list, right-click each Started (Running) Service and then click PROPERTIES. You should see the properties windows, as shown in Figure 2. Click the Dependencies tab. Record the dependencies for DHCP Client, DNS Client, Local Session Manager, Antivirus, and Windows Event Log.

4. Using a Web browser, search the Web for a site that provides insight into what function each Service (DHCP Client, DNS Client, Local Session Manager, Antivirus, and Windows Event Log, *give a short description of each in your report) provides and include this information in your report. You may refer to Microsoft Support site for this information as well.
5. For each Service identified, determine if the service is a legitimate needed service or an unauthorized service. Explain how an unauthorized service can be stopped or removed from the Service list.
Part 2
6. Using the ALIAS Lab virtual environment follow steps 1 to 3 above and make a hardcopy of the list of the services. Compare the lists from your computer and the VM environment Windows machine and discuss the differences that you find.
Prepare a report detailing the differences that you find between the Services lists on your system and the one in the ALIAS Lab making sure to identify essential Services that are needed/required or authorized in your operating system environment. Provide general information for each Panel and related Taps that you find in both the Service window and the Properties window. Use screen shots of the work being accomplished.
GRADING: This project is worth 100 points. The grade will come from your paper, and supporting documentation with the paper. Papers which are clearly organized, referenced, describe how you loaded (signed on) and operated the VM will score higher. Also include an analysis of how VMs can support your security posture and a small business environment using Services. The better the comprehensive analysis the higher the grade.
COLLABORATION POLICY: If needed, ask for help from Cyber Security Lab assistants. Each student is to work individually on this lab project. The work on the subsequent paper will also be an individual effort.
TURN-IN REQUIREMENT: The lab report is due Tuesday, 1 March. Papers will be 8 pages in minimum length (use Times New Roman, size 12 Font, and 1 1/2 line spaced). The title page does not count as one of the pages for the report. The reference list will not count as one of the page requirements. Appendices will not count as one of the pages for the report. All references will be properly cited throughout the paper. A hard copy and electronic copy of the paper will be submitted for grading. Please make sure your name is on all items submitted.
