Describe your leadership, supervision, and teaching experiences.

I am applying for a position as a team leader with the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps. I am not good at creating anecdotes or even talking about myself. Attached to this, I will include both my resume as well as the motivational statement I wrote for the position; please refrain from quoting the motivational statement verbatum, I am trying to make my responses to questions different. I will also include an attachment with bullet points regarding my professional goals. Here are the two questions I am answering:

1. Describe your leadership, supervision, and teaching experiences; the challenges you
experienced and what you learned from these experiences.

2. Explain how your participation as a team leader will strengthen the AmeriCorps*NCCC, what
you hope to gain from this experience, and how the team leader experience will further
your personal and professional goals.

I am asking for two pages: one page, paragraph form, for each question.

Motivational Statement:

I didnt truly understand the meaning of service to others until a cold day last March; it was the first day of my first spike as a corps member with the AmeriCorps NCCC Atlantic Region campus. I found myself ankle deep in icy mud, trying to plant a tree for the first time. Even though this is a small act, with time a tree transforms into something much bigger than itself; it provides shade and helps to purify the air and water. Much like a tree nurtures the surrounding environment, serving others helps to nurture and support communities. While serving in NCCC, I have had the unique opportunity to plant the seed of hope not only in the communities I have served, but also within myself. However, just like shoveling through rocky soil, this is not always easy. The work I have done was, at times, tedious (like spending an afternoon picking gravel out of grass), but I learned how to look at the bigger picture (building a driveway for a low-income disabled individual). I also found strength in the knowledge that being dedicated to a cause brings with it the ability to gain strength from ones successes while also drawing inspiration from ones failures. The challenges that come from working and living with 10 other people for 10 months can seem both daunting and difficult, but it was seeing others be hopeful, especially in challenging situations, that inspired me every day to give back. Ive come to appreciate the vast amount of selflessness in our society, as I myself am driven by an ever present desire to pay it forward. In the same sense as nurturing a tree as it grows, serving others helps foster a sense of community as well as provides experiences for personal growth. Being an agent of change starts by wanting to be part of something bigger than oneself, and I want to continue to inspire myself and community members in the future. Nothing ever happens without action, people aren”t inspired without compassion, and change doesn”t come about without the effort to improve things for the better. My time in NCCC was the most incredible, rewarding, and constructive period of my life. I want to continue to spread this message throughout the rest of my life, and plant seeds of change in other people along the way. I want to serve as an inspiration for others, a reminder that unless someone gets in the mud to plant that seed, there will never be a tree.
