Tasks: Decide what tasks you’re going to ask the user to do. How will you describe the tasks to the users? You should test multiple tasks or multiple versions of the same task, depending on your prototype and design. Plan for each user test to last a minimum of 15 minutes. The task should not be overly specific or constrained – for example, if you have redesigned an airline reservation site, a good task might be “Make a reservation to fly home for spring break.” Create whatever scripts you will need for your facilitator.
Data: What are you going to measure (time, questions, errors, overall satisfaction, etc.)? How will you make the measurements (by what combination of observation, exit interview, other means)? How will you collect data (on paper, online survey, video recording, other)? Create whatever materials you need to collect your data.
Users: Who will be your test subjects? How will you recruit them? Choose people whose characteristics are representative of the intended users of the system. Try not to use family members or close friends, because they may not be candidly critical of the design. You must have a minimum of five test subjects. This means that you may need to have one or two additional tests scheduled to allow for no-shows or other failures.
Roles: During the user tests, which of your team members will be the facilitator, the “Wizard” pretending to be the computer, the observer(s), other roles? In real user testing, nobody on the testing team would switch roles between test subjects because it would make the testing inconsistent. For purposes of this assignment, however, you may switch roles for different test subjects if you wish, just so each team member can experience more than one role.
