An approved practicum proposal needs to be completed prior to commencing the practicum. Please use the practicum proposal template provided. An electronic copy of the template is available on STREAM.
Your practicum proposal should contain:
1. Signed proposal approval checklist.
2. A title page – paper number and name, area of practice, student name and ID.
3. Contents page.
4. An area of practice description and philosophical statement that:
a. Describes a clearly defined area of practice that specifies the range and parameters of your clinical focus. Include things such as population group characteristics (provide basic demographics), key clinical roles/responsibilities; boundaries and limits for practice; interventions/treatments you will provide as a NP; and health consumer outcomes you seek to achieve.
b. Demonstrates an advanced autonomous clinical role, along with evidence of collaborative approach.
c. Reflects a nursing perspective and outline the nursing models/theories/frameworks/values which underpin and guide your practice.
d. The practice and philosophical statement must not exceed two pages.
5. Discuss the legislation that underpins nursing practice and prescribing in New Zealand including the education and competency requirements.
6. Use the published literature to describe how an advanced nursing practice role (NP or CNS) could be utilised in your area of practice to improve patient outcomes.
7. Reference list (APA 6th edition).
8. Appendix 1: A learning contract containing the following:
o A paragraph stating your intended arrangements for supervised time with your clinical preceptor in your usual practice setting. You may include (and are encouraged to include) one or two other related practice settings to further your learning. Include your plan for regular clinical supervision meetings (at least weekly).
o A self-review of the NP competencies to identify your gaps. Develop a learning plan that includes goals, strategies, criteria to measure achievement and dates
o A completed and signed practicum agreement.
9. Appendix 2: Pharmacopoeia – Include the drugs you would most commonly use within your defined area of practice. List the drugs in classes; for each drug include the following information: generic name, trade name/s, mode of action, indication/s, usual dose, dosage form, precautions, well known side effects, contraindications and any drug interactions that you need to be aware of when prescribing, safety on use in pregnancy, and if special authority is required.
10. Your professional supervisor and clinical preceptor must sign the proposal approval checklist on page 1 of the template prior to submitting your work to STREAM for marking. Your academic supervisor will sign when s/he has marked your work
