Abstract
The impact of tuberculosis (TB) on health worldwide is still major. The World Health Organization (WHO) has estimated that 8.6 million people became infected with TB in 2012 and that, of these 1.3 million died, and approximately 320,000 of those who died were infected with HIV. The diagnosis and detection of TB and MDR-TB create difficult impediments to the control of TB. Treatment can be commenced only when TB is detected in patients. Besides the traditional methods, there have been several new and improved approaches, both non-molecular and molecular, to detect the Mycobacterium tuberculosis pathogen and resistance to first- and second-line drugs. Because of recent technological advances in the diagnosis of TB, new drugs for its treatment and better therapy regimens for improved clinical care have provided hope that the prevalence of TB will soon be controlled around the world.
