Computerized Physician Order Entry
Computerized Physician Order Entry is an electronic method by which medical practitioners enter and manage patients’ information during their treatment. The patient order input into the system is usually communicated over a computer network to other departments like pharmacy, radiology, and laboratory. Computerized Physician Order Entry is important in healthcare facilities as it reduces the time for order distribution, completion, and resource allocation. These systems are known to increase the overall efficiency of patient care by reducing the time spent by a patient in a healthcare facility (Vecchione, 2015). The reduction in time spent at an hospital by a patient is because orders are communicated electronically through departments and acted upon immediately. Studies show that use of Computerized Physician Order Entry reduced patient’s stay in hospital by sixty-three percent (Vecchione, 2015).
The use of Computerized Physician Order Entry in healthcare facilities is also known to improve patients’ safety (Steele & DeBrow, 2008). Traditionally orders were handwritten and delivered manually. Errors were bound to happen either through a misreading of handwriting, or transcription of a prescription to the wrong patient. Such errors led to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. Through the use of Computerized Physician Order Entry, such errors are reduced because the system provides for error checking and orders are entered at the point of care with the patient. The study conducted by Steele and DeBrow showed that the use of Computerized Physician Order Entry in healthcare facilities significantly helped in the efforts towards improving patients’ safety (Steele & DeBrow, 2008). When correctly used in healthcare facilities, Computerized Physician Order Entry have been shown to reduce the errors occurring when inputting patients’ orders. This system has significantly enhanced the quality of healthcare by improving patients’ safety and reducing the duration of their stay in hospitals.
