Just as you may use the beat of a song to learn a dance, babies use the phonemic patterns of their environment to learn language. In fact, it is scientifically proven that babies who are talked to using infant directed speech (IDS)—also known as “baby talk” or “motherese”—develop language faster than babies who grow up in quieter environments. Alertly listening to the elongated sounds of IDS, babies begin to mimic patterns, starting first as simple bursts of sound and babbles, to strings of words and declarative phrases.
