Rubric for Problem 1, Quiz 1: BIOM3710 sections, 2016 spring semester
10 points per section (major bullet); more than half complete for partial credit of 5 or more
- Setting up the problem
- Identify and name variables: assume only mosquitos spread the disease. (This situation is not true, but may describe the major pathway by which the Zika virus is spread.)
- Draw diagram of some sort, identify interactions of major variables
- Identify interactions between or among variables
- Name “parameters” and set directions of interaction
- Writing up a dynamic description
- Identify rates of change of variables
- Write down constraining relationships, e.g. total number of people or mosquitos
- Identify or choose initial conditions (note alternative or similar ones)
- Count numbers of variables and equations – iterate above two if needed
- Simplify and move toward first-level (simple) model of the situation
- Recognize the mosquito vector as a relatively constant situation, fitted to birth, death, feeding events (blood meals), and viral infection of vectors.
- Simplify equations toward the normal SIR model
Graded re-do of problems 1 and 2 of Quiz One.
Use your submission for the first problem and improve your answer using the rubric. Provide a complete correct answer to the two problems using the Rubric for problem one by following these steps.
- Use the above rubric and the “guide to solution” provided by e-mail to study and develop a better method of solution of the original problem.
- Set aside the “guide to solution,” and re-work the submitted problem to obtain a complete answer. Ensure that your original solution and the new complete answer are linked in logical ways that show where you were correct, where you were stalled, and where you were incorrect. For the latter, show why or how that step might be recognized and overcome by iteration of effort.
- Use the rubric to grade the original solution and the new solution. Mark your own submission.
- Use a Matlab or Simulink program to obtain plots of the simplified SIRs-mosquito model.
4. Submit paper versions of your solutions for grading and return. Submit electronic versions of your materials for course documentation
