2) Life Course activity #1
– Write about the most important events, significant influences from other people, major trips/vacations, important milestones, religious experiences…(the things that make you, YOU!)
– When reviewing other student’s life course, identify commonalities
– Look for Rites of passage: those rituals that mark a symbolic transition from one social position to another. These rites of passage dramatize and validate changes in a person’s status. What religious rites of passage can you think of? What is the change in status that is marked by this rite of passage?

Starting on page 97 of your textbook, read about “Religion Over the Life Course”. Reflect on your own experience with religion and observe your parents, grandparents and other mentor’s experiences with religion. What examples can you offer to support or critique religious participation in each stage of the life course?
4) Commitment
Using your own experience of religion or doing some research on a religion of interest to you (maybe the religion you will use on your 2nd and 3rd paper), find examples of each type of commitment as described by Kanter.
