Open skills are part of the NMC competencies, but are specific example of practice in depth. Student will devise their own skills. Broad heading are taken from the best Practice Competencies and Capabilities for pre-Registration Mental Health Nurse in England (DoH 2006).
Student will devise a specific skill which reflects each category, use literature in your analysis of the skill. Each skill will include a short reference list of 10 references
As a nursing student you are required to identifies own skill around Values and around some of the following below and depending on which use a reflective model for example Rogers reflective model or any appropriate to reflect on your placement experience and with at least 15 references and 400 word.
Open Skill 1 Values = Promote a culture that values and respects the diversity of individual and enables their recovery
Working collaboratively with carers or representatives to enable their full involvement in the care process on the basis of informed choice.
Working with a client which promotes social inclusion
Challenging discriminatory practice
Using language in a way which demonstrates anti- discriminatory practice
Addressing cultural and spiritual needs of a person in relation to their mental health needs.
Enabling a person to express a basic human rights
Demonstrating acceptance
Reflecting on a personal belief or value which is challenged by practice

Open Skill 2 communication = Use a range of communication skill to establish, maintain and manage relationships with individuals who have mental health problems, their carers and key people involved in their care.
As a nursing student you are required to identifies own skill around communication and interpersonal skill of the nurse and around some of the following below in placement experience and with at least 10 references and 400 word
Using interpersonal and basic counselling skills
Interpersonal skills to reduce a client anxiety on admission/initial contact Negotiating boundaries with client
Providing a safe relationship
using a specific communication strategy with a client
Using strategies to promote hope
Enabling client to question aspect of care

As a nursing student you are required to identifies own skill around psychosocial care and around some of the following below in your placement experience and with at least 15 references and 400 word.
Working with a client to improve an aspect of their quality of life( diet )
Working with a client towards meaningful activity/ work
Helping a client develop coping strategies
Goal setting with a client
Using a psycho- education in identifying early signs and signs of relapse
Facilitating health promotion with client with mental health needs
Using a creative mediums with a client eg music, poetry,writing, strory= telling, art

Physical assessment of a person under the influence of alcohol or drug and Doing, understanding and reporting physical observations
Helping a client to understand their diabetes
Working with client to help them manage pain
Enabling client and significant other to understand the implications, side effect and special precautions associated with the medication they have been prescribed
